How to prepare Gbegiri Soup| Nigerian Cuisine

Nigeria is one of the ethnically diverse countries globally. Each ethnic group has its unique cuisine, which sets it apart from the rest. This makes it a challenge to choose the national dish. However, the country boasts of its rich blend of vegetable soups and carbohydrate dishes. Trade is said to have a great influence on the culture and cuisine felt by different ethnic communities. Most dishes have spices with great influence from Asia. As per Africa culture, women are expected to participate in all the cooking process. One of the popular recipes is Gbegiri soup.

What is Gbegiri soup?

Gbegiri is a tasty stew that is prepared by the Yoruba tribe. The soup may contain different ingredients but beans is a must have.

Like in most African countries, using the left hand to eat is considered to be unclean and a sign of disrespect. Not only does this only apply in eating but also when receiving gifts or shaking hands.

So if you are left-handed, you don’t need to worry as you can prepare your Gbegiri soup at the comfort of your home. And below is all what you need.

Recipe

  • 500g brown beans
  • 3tbsp ground crayfish
  • Palm oil ½ cup
  • Smoked medium-sized fish (any type)
  • 1 tbsp. habanero pepper (ground)
  • Salt
  • 1 cup of honey (optional)
  • Meat stock

Guide

  • Soak your beans overnight
  • Drain the water and wash them properly before cooking
  • Put in a cooking pot and simmer for 3 hours
  • Once fully cooked, remove them and drain the soup. Put the beans aside to cool down
  • Once your beans have cooled down, blend them until you get a smooth, consistent thick mixture
  • Put your palm oil, crayfish, smoked fish, pepper, salt, meat stock, and blended beans in a cooking pot. Place it on a source of heat and bring it to boil for 10 minutes. As the mixture boils, keep stirring slowly but do not over-do it
  • Add honey and stir the mixture to incorporate it well
  • Serve with bread or enjoy it the way it is
